U-turn Program
The U-turn Program is a 10-session culturally appropriate program designed specifically for elementary and secondary school Anishinabe students (12-17 years old) as an Extra Judicial Measures (EJM). The Program is offered four times per year. In addition, a fifth session on Anger Management and Traditional Ways is also held.
The goals of the program are to:
o encourage a young person to demonstrate responsibility in the community while providing him/her with the opportunity to recognize his/her skills and abilities and encourage constructive use of leisure time.
o encourage community involvement
o encourage making reparations to the victim (apology, community services hours, restitution, participation in supportive programming, drug/alcohol treatment, crime prevention)
o provide an opportunity for victim participation in the decision related to the measures selected and receive reparation
o address criminogenic factors to guide the selection of appropriate targets for service i.e. poor relationships, poor problem-solving skills, anti-social thinking, substance abuse education, aggressive behaviour, positive decision-making, cultural teachings to live life positively, anger management and manage impulsive behaviour
Referrals for the program come from the UCCMM Community Justice Program, the Court system, Probation services, Police, School Principals, Community or Health Services for youth-at-risk and youth in conflict with the law.
