Gwekwaadziwin Miikan
Gwekwaadziwin is one of the Seven Grandfather Teachings. In the Ojibwe language it means “Living the right way.” The program provides a client-centered model of mental health and addiction treatment for Anishinabek young adults. It will support a community of healthy adults working towards wellness, education, and economic prosperity for First Nations individuals and communities. Gwekwaadziwin’s program meets the client on the spectrum of care, from stabilization through treatment, live in aftercare, outpatient aftercare and transition back into their family and community.
The idea for Gwekwaadziwin was born out of a need, seen on Manitoulin and throughout the North. A development steering committee was originally created 5 years ago and currently consists of UCCMM CEO Hazel Recollet, past UCCMM Tribal Chair Joe Hare, Chief Linda Debassige, Roger Beaudin of M’Chigeeng Health Services and Kenjgewin Teg Education Institute Executive Director Stephanie Roy, and current UCCMM Tribal Chair - Chief Patsy Corbiere. The committee along with staff and leaders in the helping field undertook an extensive review of existing programs, scientific literature, and site visits to a broad range of mental health and addiction programs. Based on what they learned and Anishinabek teachings, Gwekwaadziwin was created.
The Seven Grandfathers program is designed for young adults age 19-30. The Gwekwaadziwin programs consist of three phases: Land Based Treatment, Live in Aftercare, and Community Aftercare. Where appropriate, clients may move directly from phase 1 to phase 3; or they may enter phase 2 directly following completion of a treatment program elsewhere.
Gwekwaadzawin Miikan is now accepting clients.
Intake can be completed in person or over the phone. Referrals can be made by self, family member with applicants consent, community worker, clinician, or by any other professional.
